Managing Screen Time as a Mom

·

I love having a few minutes to scroll Facebook while I’m nursing. It’s the perfect quiet moment for me during the day when I can hold my baby close, sit (!), and catch up on what’s happening with my friends on social. But it’s all too tempting to keep reaching for my phone to mindlessly scroll for updates and new pictures throughout the day. Here are a few of the things that help me to be more intentional about the time I’m on my phone.

1. Charge the phone in another room. This helps me avoid picking up my phone out of habit and I’m also not distracted by unimportant notifications, which brings me to my next point.

2. Disable notifications. I have done this for the majority of my apps. I want my homescreen to be clean, so when I see something sitting on it, it gets my immediate attention.

3. Do not bring the phone into bed at night. I am still tempted to do this, but find that I go to sleep much more easily when I haven’t spent the previous 30 minutes (or longer) looking at my phone.

4. And I remind myself to be present. The most important things are in the room with me and I want them to know it!
