May Day!

·

It’s May Day! One of our favorite traditions that brings back childhood memories of making May baskets, picking flowers and hanging our creations on friends’ doors to surprise them.

Sometimes we made cones from construction paper and stapled a handle on, or stapled two cones together with the handle in the middle. Other times we made the woven heart baskets and once in awhile, we just used plastic cups with ribbons or pipe cleaners for the handle.

Next came picking the flowers. It always depended on the year and what was blooming, but we usually had tulips, daffodils, violets, and crocuses. We would wrap the stems in wet paper towels and aluminum foil and sometimes we had to tape them to the baskets so they wouldn’t fall out.

Then off we went to deliver them. After hanging them on the doorknob, we would ring the doorbell and run.  I’m sure we were caught, but most people waited until we were out of sight before they opened their doors.

These are some of the May baskets I made with my little ones! There’s no pressure to make anything fancy as it’s always the thought that counts! Creating and giving May Day baskets teaches the babes the joy of giving to others!

Happy May Day!
